MOT time is stress-full for any motorist and now the law has changed to make it harder for faulty cars to pass the test, here is what it means for you. The UK government has announced that it will run a tier system for testers to abide by such as Dangerous meaning a direct risk to road safety and or has a an impact on the environment. This will automatically be a fail major meaning it could put other road users and yourself in danger and or has a direct impact on the environment and must be repaired immiediatly. This will be an automatic fail Minor meaning not having a direct impact on your safety and other road users as well as the environment, action needed to repair as soon as possible. A tester can pass a vehicle Advisory meaning it could become more of a serious problem in the near future and the course of action is to monitor and repair if necessary. A tester can pass if necessary. And the one we all prefer to see is of course pass meaning its safe to use on the public highway and meets the minimum legal standards and emissions.

Diesel car emissions
With all the noise going on lately surrounding diesel-gate and manufactures waffling the guidelines on how much toxic fumes new cars are supposed to be emitting its no wonder the government have steeped in and advised testers of much tighter tolerances towards DPF emissions. A DPF filter or diesel particulate filter is designed to sit in the exshaust systems of cars and vans and is made of many precious metals designed to catch the soot that leaves any diesel engine. Your vehicle will immediately fail if a tester sees any smoke coming from the exshaust or has evidence that your DPF has been tampered with, so DPF delete to increase the power may not seem such a good idea after all.

New guidelines
With the advent of L.E.D lighting most new cars come with DRL or daytime running lights as standard these systems will now be checked as part of the new test procedures also I have taken the time to add a few bullet points from https://www.gov.uk/government/news/mot-changes-20-may-2018 which you might find interesting.

Brake fluid must not have any contamination

Any fluid leaks will imidatly fail

Old certificate on the left and the new on the right

VEHICLES OVER 40 YEARS OLD
If you’re the lucky owner of a classic car that’s 40 years or older the new test laws now say that your car is exempt from needing a test for example if your car was first registered on 31 May 1978 it wont need an MOT from 31 May 2018.

WHAT HAPPEN’S TO MY CAR AT THE SCRAP YARD?
So you just finally got round to scrapping your car or van and now your wondering what will happen to my vehicle when it goes to the scrap yard, well there are a number of things that can happen, if your car is old and had a tuff life and the engine has thrown a rod out the side then its most likely that its just going to be recycled for scrap metal this means that you will only get paid based on the weight of the vehicle although some dealers may give extra if it has alloy wheels or a desirable engine.

SCRAP METAL RECYCLING
Once your vehicle arrives at the yard the vehicle will need to be depolluted this means that all the toxic and hazardous chemicals will need to be carefully removed and your dealer will need to be licensed as an ATF or authorised treatment facility this means that they can legally dispose of your vehicle and you can be sure they have strict waste rules to adhere to. Once your car is up on a ramp the operator will punch holes in the sump, fuel tank and shock absorbers, this is to drain the harmful liquids that are present in every car, with the car still on the ramp it allows access to remove the wheels and the catalytic converter which will then be graded according to size and model which could increase the value as some “cats” can have a value of up to £500. Once all hazardous waste has been removed its now time to pull the engine out, now all that’s left is the shell of your car which goes over to the crusher this metal is know as iron.

EXPORT
Some vehicles on Uk roads have a far greater value in other countries like Africa or Europe where cars and 4×4’s are a lot more expensive to purchase, if your wondering why your car or 4×4 has an export valuation its most likely because the engine is in high demand. We live in a throw away society where its convenient to dispose and replace rather than to repair. The most desirable vehicles are likely to be of Japanese manufacture as these are usually good for a couple of hundred thousand miles and part’s are readily available.

FIT FOR ROAD
It may be that your car failed its MOT on silly bits and you decided that its time to go to the main dealer and get a new car straight out of the showroom as a treat for your hard work, which means that with a little time and money your car or van could be put back on the road with a new MOT test, some times our customers have asked if we could not send to the bin but to repair and let someone else have use for a little while longer.

SALVAGE
Have you been involved in an accident and decided not to go through the insurance well your car or van could be classified as salvage which means someone may choose to repair it and return back to the road or a dealer may choose to break it for part’s and sell on for a tidy profit. If your wondering what is my car worth then enter your Reg, miles and postcode www.quickscrap.co.uk to receive an instant valuation.

HOW TO SCRAP A VEHICLE

Are you wondering how to scrap my car then read on this will help make the process clearer for you.

Has your car or van failed its MOT test or thrown its cam belt? Well don’t blow a head gasket its actually a really easy process. Once you have decided that enough is enough you will need to find a reputable and licensed scrap car collector to give you a quote for your unwanted vehicle, its worth checking the reputation of your chosen collector to see if they pay what they quote and turn up on time most decent scrap or end of life dealers will have a lot of feedback and in most cases you can see how they treated other customers.

If you know the registration number of your vehicle and the mileage then enter these details online and you will receive a free no obligation valuation generated by our clever software. Usually these are instant or with in a few minutes, a little tip is to use your smart phone and upload a picture of your scrap car or scrap van that way the dealer can identify your model quicker which may just give you a higher valuation meaning you get more cash for your old banger.

If you don’t have time or don’t know some details about you vehicle then you can call your chosen scrap car collector to talk it through with them, quickscrapcars.co.uk have a dedicated call centre with professional trained staff that will explain the process and quote you over the phone.

Once your happy with the quote received its time to get your car ready for scrap heaven, you will need to remove all your belongings from the boot and empty all the change from the ash tray, make sure you have your V5c or log book as its known in the trade ready for the dealer, make sure they put their real name and address on the yellow slip (top right) and retain this to post off once you both signed it, never let someone take the whole log book as you will still be liable for this after the sale, which usually means fines and headaches are coming to your letterbox.

It is usually a good idea to make sure the collector has good access to the vehicle and is not blocked in when they come to collect. Don’t worry if the battery is flat as any decent dealer will carry charged up jump packs and a winch just in case it’s a non runner.

And that is it your car is on its way to be recycled it may be broken down for spares or it may be sent abroad for export or if it doesn’t have much value then its just scrap metal. Head over to my other blog post scrap yard cars to see what happens when the car arrives in the yard.
